🆕How to assign external devices to Safe or Untrusted destination groups

You can now assign external devices to Safe or Untrusted destination groups immediately when they appear in your environment – even before data is transferred to them.

In this article, you will learn:

Introduction

You can protect your data by assigning external devices (like USB drives) to either Safe or Untrusted destination groups. This helps you control where data can be transferred based on your company's protection policies.

Two ways to assign external devices

Option 1: External devices section (recommended for new devices)

✍️New external devices that appear in your environment (e.g., a new USB drive connected to a computer) automatically show up in the External devices section.

Best for: Assigning external devices to Safe or Untrusted destination groups immediately when they appear in your environment. This allows you to protect your data before any data transfer occurs.

What you can do:

  • Assign external devices one at a time.
  • Assign external devices only to specific destination groups. If no groups exist, you must create at least one.

Limitation: You cannot assign external devices to the general Safe/Untrusted columns - you must use specific destination groups.

Option 2: Data destinations section

Use for: Assigning external devices to which data has already been transferred.

What you can do:

  • Assign multiple external devices at once.
  • Assign external devices to specific destination groups or to the general Safe/Untrusted columns.

Limitation: External devices only appear in the Data destinations section after data has been transferred to them. That means you can’t assign new devices as Safe or Untrusted in the Data destinations section until they are used.

FAQ

Q: Can I assign multiple external devices at once from the External Devices section?
A: No, devices can only be assigned individually from the External Devices section. To assign multiple devices at once, use the Data Destinations section (note that devices must have received data first to appear there).
